26 Vermonters Named to U.S. Ski and Snowboard Teams

Meet the 26 Vermonters who made the team for 2018-2019.
It was a big week for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Teams: nearly a third of the U.S. Alpine Team and close to half of the Cross Country team are skiers who either grew up or trained in Vermont.  These range from greats such as alpine racer Mikaela Shiffrin, Olympic gold medalist in cross country Jesse Diggins, Olympic legend snowboarder Kelly Clark and freeski World Cup champion Devin Logan.
But they also include a number of new names. Impressively, Stratton Mountain School claims fourteen athletes across this year’s teams–more than any other academy in the United States.

The U.S. Alpine Ski Team (9)

There’s a chance to watch one of the best skiers in history as Mikaela Shiffrin will be racing at Killington this weekend. This season, she’ll be chasing more slalom wins. With 32 career slalom victories to date, she’s on the heels of her childhood hero, Austrian skier Marlies Schild, who holds the current world record of 35 slalom victories. This season, she also has the opportunity to make history as the first ski racer to win four consecutive World Championship gold medals.

Abi Jewett of Ripton gets to race against Mikaela Shiffrin at the Killington World Cup. Jewett takes to the stage as a rookie member of the U.S. Ski Team’s  Alpine C Team. Alice Merryweather is also back as a member of the Women’s Alpine B Team, but specializing in the GS and downhill.

Lindsey Vonn announced in October that 2018-2019 will be her final season of professional ski racing–regardless of whether she can break Ingemar Stenmark’s world record for most World Cup wins. With 82 FIS Ski World Cup victories to date, Vonn is just four away from Stenmark’s record of 86 and she’s gunning for the overall World Cup globe in downhill this season too.  Regardless of whether she can beat Stenmark’s record, Vonn is still the winningest female ski racer of all time.

Look out for giant slalom and super-G skier Ryan Cochran-Siegle of Starksboro, Vt. Cochran-Siegle made the Men’s B Team after a stellar performance at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Additionally, newcomers Zoe Zimmerman, who trains at Burke Academy, and Ben Ritchie of Waitsfield, who trained with Jewett at Green Mountain Valley School, also made the cut as members of the Development team. Then there’s veteran George Steffey, a graduate of Stratton Mountain School who made the Alpine C Team.

The U.S. Cross Country Ski Team (7)

Sophie Caldwell, Ida Sargent and Jessie Diggins —all Vermont residents— are back as members of the U.S. Cross Country Women’s A Team. Patrick Caldwell, Sophie’s brother, also made the B Team, and Landgrove’s Ben and Katharine Ogden made the program’s Development Team. Stratton Mountain School cleaned up here too– Diggins, who, along with Kikkan Randall won the first gold medal in U.S. Cross Country ski history in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, is also a Stratton Mountain School graduate. Three-time Olympian Simi Hamilton is a graduate of Stratton Mountain School, as are Sophie and Patrick Caldwell, Katharine and Ben Ogden and Julia Kern.

U.S. Freestyle Ski Team (3)

Megan Nick of Shelburne, Emerson Smith of Dover and Hannah Soar of Killington all made the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team. Nick qualified for the Aerials D Team, and Smith and Soar will be competing as members of the Development team in Moguls.

U.S. Freeski Ski Team (3)

Keep an eye on Caroline Claire, who, in the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang 2018 became the first Stratton Mountain School student to compete in the Olympics while enrolled. She was named to the Pro Slopestyle contingent along with current student Mac Forehand, who was named to the Rookie Slopestyle Team. Mount Snow superstar Devin Logan is also back as a member of the women’s Halfpipe and Slopestyle Pro Teams. Logan grew up in West Dover, Vt. and is a two-time Olympian. She won a silver in slopestyle in Sochi in 2014 and competed in PyeongChang last winter.

U.S. Snowboard Team (4)

Four Vermonters were named to this year’s U.S. Snowboard Team, among them Lindsey Jacobellis (Women’s Snowboardcross A Team), Alex Deibold (Men’s Snowboardcross A Team), Julia Marino (Women’s Slopestyle/Big Air Pro Team), Kelly Clark (Women’s Halfpipe Pro Team).
